Roselle, a modern village developed between the interesting archaeological area of ​​the ancient city, first Etruscan and then Roman, Grosseto, the provincial capital with splendid, perfectly preserved Medici walls and an important Archaeological and Art Museum of Maremma.The medieval villages of Campagnatico, mentioned in the Purgatory of Divine Commedy by Dante Alighieri, and Montorsaio, with beautiful and parish churches protected by ancient walls and fortifications, surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, olive groves and vineyards.

 


 

In 15-30 minutes

The splendid pine forest of Tombolo, a protected natural area that extends for about 15 km parallel to the wide sandy beaches and coastal dunes from the small port of Castiglion della Pescaia, which includes it in the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve, at the Padule della Trappola, passing through Marina di Grosseto and Principina a Mare, where the pines and the undergrowth of Mediterranean scrub go inland for about a kilometer. From the mouth of the Ombrone river, passing through Alberese and up to the promontory of Talamone, another important protected area of ​​Tuscany extends for over 100 square kilometers: the Maremma Natural Park. This park with the Uccellina’s mountains running parallel to a wonderful coast and a spectacular nature can be discovered through fascinating itineraries and guided tours, walking, riding horses or by canoe. Continuing south, the breathtaking views of the Argentario promontory can be discovered , the highest on the Tuscan coast, which includes areas of great naturalistic and fauna richness, such as the Lagoon of Orbetello and the WWF Oasis of Burano. It can be also discovered the interesting hilly archaeological area of Ansedonia with the ruins of an ancient Roman settlement, and the lively port centers such as Orbetello, Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole, from which boats leave every day to reach the small but splendid islands of Giannutri and Giglio.

 


 

In 40-50 minutes

Heading south, you can visit the charming medieval village of Capalbio with double walls and an enchanted and timeless atmosphere, not far from the fairy-tale Tarot Garden with the huge, visionary, colorful sculptures by Nike de Saint de Phalle. To the north, the renowned and luxurious port of Punta Ala, the refined medieval village of Massa Marittima with the cathedral, a splendid example of Romanesque and Renaissance art in Tuscany, overlooking the beautiful Piazza Garibaldi and the valley below. In the hinterland, the tuff cities with mysterious Etruscan roots: Pitigliano (called Little Jerusalem), Sorano and Sovana can be discovered and also the thermal springs of Saturnia (much appreciated for their curative properties especially by tourism in the winter months) the village of Scansano. Inland, towards the slopes of fir, beech and chestnut trees of Mount Amiata,it is an ancient extinct volcano with a peak that exceeds 1700 meters above sea level, with a ski resort and the possibility in every season to practice various activities, trekking and hiking, mountain biking and cycling in the mountains and valleys populated by deer, fallow deer, wolves, roe deer and chamois… and there alre also the thermal baths of Bagno Vignone and Bagni di San Filippo. The Natural Reserve of Monte Amiata within the unspoiled Monte Labro Nature Reserve, ancient and legendary abbeys such as Sant’Antimo with the Gregorian chants of the monks at sunset, San Salvatore with the splendid Lombard crypt and Monte Oliveto Maggiore with the frescoes by Sodoma, the park-garden of Daniel Spoerri in Seggiano, with the works of various contemporary artists.

By comfortable buses through the rolling Tuscan hills, it is possible to visit Siena, the medieval city of the Palio delle Contrade which takes place twice a year in the well known Piazza del Campo, and the hinterland of Val d’Orcia, with harmonious landscapes, and charming villages such as Monteriggioni, Montalcino, Pienza.

Numerous cities of art such as the splendid Florence, capital of Tuscany, jewel of Renaissance masterpieces, Pisa with the Leaning Tower and Piazza dei Miracoli famous all over the world, or the grandeur and breathtaking beauty of Rome are all well served even with convenient bus and train connections! And many other small villages, less known but no less enchanting, which we will show you with pleasure, with their festivals, village festivals and fascinating traditions! Restaurants and cellars that can be visited, with typical Maremma dishes and wine tasting of the wines of the area like Morellino di Scansano to Brunello di Montalcino!

 

 


 

From the harbours of the coast

ships depart every day for the seven islands of the Tuscan archipelago :Elba, Giglio, Giannutri, Capraia, Pianosa, Montecristo and Gorgona. These islands are all different in history, size, access possibilities and geological characteristics of the territory, but united by the wild nature of the landscape, the beautiful beaches, the simple life of the inhabitants, the magnificent seabed protected by the establishment of the protected area of ​​the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, the largest marine park in Europe that protects about 60,000 hectares of the Tyrrhenian coast.
